For me, breeding isn’t about simply producing puppies. It means taking responsibility for the dogs I bring into the world and doing my best to give each of them the right start, and the right home.
One of the things I find fascinating about dachshunds is their genetics. Colours, patterns, coat types and the way different traits are inherited have become something I genuinely enjoy learning about. I’m always reading, researching and trying to understand more, because I believe breeding decisions should be thoughtful rather than left to chance.
But looks are only one part of a dog.
Temperament matters enormously to me. I want dachshunds that are loving, confident and enjoyable to share a life with. A beautiful coat might catch your eye, but it’s the personality underneath it that you’ll be living with every day.
The same goes for puppies. They aren’t interchangeable. Even within the same litter, each one begins showing their own personality, confidence, habits and funny little quirks.
That’s why I don’t believe the goal should be to place a puppy as quickly as possible. I’d much rather take the time to get to know them and help find the home that suits them best.
Over the years, I’ve also seen just how much the right dog can mean to someone. They can bring companionship, routine, confidence and an incredible amount of happiness into a person’s life.
Seeing that bond develop is one of the things that makes everything that goes into raising a litter worthwhile.
